GIANT Health Event

The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, will be giving a keynote speech on the second day of the GIANT Health event, Thursday November 22 2018, which is staged at Chelsea Football Club, Stamford Bridge, London.

GIANT Health, set up by American-born technology entrepreneur Barry Shrier, who lives in Oxford, is an annual conference dedicated to the promotion of health technology that improves the outcomes of citizens globally. The event celebrates the value of the contributions to healthtech innovation from diverse people including inventors, app developers, clinicians, corporate enterprises, the investment community, healthcare service administrators and startups.

The festival of digital health has captured the interest of healthcare professionals globally and is set to attract over 2,000 delegates, 325 speakers, 150 startups and include 125 hours of content. The mission is to educate, share learnings, network and accelerate social, technological and business developments in a friendly and informal environment.

Both the Secretary of State and Barry Shrier have a background in software technology, which explains why the values of the GIANT initiative and the Government’s new health vision are so similar.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said, “I want the UK to become the home of HealthTech to complement our world-leading life science, artificial intelligence and genomic sectors and some of the best technology companies on the planet.

“We must embrace this coming wave of technology and transform our NHS into an ecosystem of innovation and enterprise so patients benefit from the latest treatments.

“I’m looking forward to meeting the pioneering companies at GIANT Health and identifying ways we can work together to revolutionise healthcare.”

Barry Shrier, founder of GIANT added, “We feel honoured that the Health Secretary will see for himself the amazing innovation and enterprise on show, designed to deliver the best possible outcomes for society at large.”

Opening both days of the conference is the Chairman of GIANT, London-based Professor Shafi Ahmed, a cancer surgeon, global educator and visionary, plus co-founder of a virtual reality (VR) company that provides novel ways to educate students.

Other speakers include Dr Janani Param, who is producing our ‘Future is Femtech’ strand which will showcase the latest developments in this fast-growing field and Rose Acton who will discuss reproductive health and fertility. In addition, the emergency medicine doctor and broadcaster Dr Saleyha Ahsan, will discuss global issues in women's health and how to support them with technology.

Simon Hooper of Health-Connected will also be showcasing their highly innovative Alexa-integrated RemindMeCare app, which as a digital therapeutic, helps those with dementia or learning difficulties reduce agitation through enhanced person-centred care and care circle engagement. Simon is leading a ‘Blockchain in Healthcare’ strand on Thursday November 22, sponsored by the leading strategic planning consultancy, Grovelands.

Other speakers of note at GIANT are Dr Michal Wlodarski, Principal, Cambridge Innovation Consulting (CamIn), who is a Principal in CamIn’s Life Sciences division where he drives business development to identify, evaluate, and integrate emerging technologies, valuable assets, and high growth applications to strategically strengthen clients' portfolios.

Also, Jacob Skinner, CEO, Thrive Wearables, a product development expert, working with people and technology to create user-driven products that offer real value. He is the driving force behind Thrive Wearables, the leading wearables design and development consultancy, taking the technology from an idea to global mass production.

As you would expect, the event has participation from all of the key multinational firms, who are investing massively in health tech. Dr Jaz Dhaliwal from IMB Watson Health will question ‘How essential is diversity to lead and deliver truly personal health solutions?’ You will also find Amazon, Novartis, Sanofi, Pearson and the leading diabetes care company, Ascensia, who is kindly sponsoring the GIANT health festival.
